Roy Scheider wasn't supposed to say it. The line that defined a generation of summer blockbusters — 'You're gonna need a bigger boat' — was never in the script. Scheider improvised it on the spot, a deadpan mutter after coming face to face with Bruce the mechanical shark for the first time. Spielberg kept it. Of course he kept it. Scheider had a gift for underplaying terror in a way that made it feel utterly real. As Chief Brody — a man afraid of water, tasked with hunting a monster in it — he brought a quiet, everyman anxiety that grounded the whole film. He wasn't a hero. He was just a guy, doing a terrifying thing, trying not to show how scared he was. That tension lives in every frame of Jaws.
